It is our great pleasure to introduce assistant professor Ankica Kovač, PhD

Here is the first interview from a series with experts, researchers and activists in the hydrogen field.

It is our great pleasure to introduce assistant professor Ankica Kovač, PhD, head of the Laboratory for Power Plants at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Naval Architecture, University of Zagreb. Ankica Kovac is an enthusiast, researcher and pioneer in the field of hydrogen promotion in Croatia. She also designed the first hydrogen-powered Croatian bike and the first Croatian gas station. Last but not least, you will not believe, she also organized the Croatia Mirai Challenge, on the route Zagreb - Brussels. We wish you a pleasant reading! H2Student team.

1. What does sustainable mobility mean to you?

To me, sustainable mobility means zero emission to the environment what gives positive impact on both community and economy.

2. How do you interpret sustainable mobility over the next 10 years?

Over the next 10 years, the most of today’s conventional vehicles will be replaced by vehicles with reduced and/or zero emission.

3. What is your priority: the distance travelled with one charge of this or that fuel or the purity of the emissions.

My priority is both at the same time, and with hydrogen, I achieve both: long distance with zero emission.

4. What are some of the biggest deficiencies on roads or traffic? What solutions do you propose?

The biggest deficiencies on roads are definitely traffic jam all day long what increase air pollution. Solutions that I could propose is to try to move vehicles from, at least, city downtown, and try to use public transport.

5. What technologies will most prosper in transportation? In cities and long distances?

Technologies that secure clean air to breathe will most prosper in transportation. In cities for short distances, this can be battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and/or fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs), and for long distance definitely FCEVs.

6. What is the place of hydrogen in these new technologies?

The place of hydrogen is in FCEVs. When we use hydrogen in FCEVs the main product is electric energy, and the only by-products are water and heat, and this the main advantage of hydrogen over the others.

7. When do you think we will see more vehicles using hydrogen technology on the roads?

We will see more hydrogen vehicles as soon as we install more hydrogen refuelling stations. I hope this is going to happen in just few years ahead.

8. What means of transport do you use for personal transportation?

I mostly use my personal car, and bicycle from to time.

9. Do you give us any advice on mobility?

First, give your best to understand the impact of harmful emissions on climate change and its consequences. Once you figure it out, the faster and much easier, you will adopt sustainable mobility.

10. Would you like to let us know more? Maybe what is on your mind but you haven't had a chance to tell yet?

Oh yes I do! 😊 I designed first Croatian hydrogen powered bicycle and first Croatian hydrogen refuelling station! And last but not least, I organized Croatia Mirai Challenge on the route Zagreb-Bruxelles and it was the very first time that hydrogen powered vehicle had driven on Croatian roads. This is what I am really proud of.
